for real though. and let me tell you why:
this was a reimagining of amy’s beloved song, and while it may have come too soon after her passing, jay-z sure as fuck captured and updated the basic polyrhythmic, swung-note pace of 1920’s trombone player charlie green by covering this song.
back to black seems to pay homage to the mentality and musical agility of ragtime jazz à la bessie smith’s “trombone cholly” — while charlie accompanies her on the trombone.

i think that even though this rendition won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, she would have given a couple fucks about the process behind the reconstruction of the song and its context within the album.
